The SAT Goes Fully Digital

The Digital SAT has undergone substantial changes, transitioning to a fully digital format that students can take on a personal device. This shift aims to enhance testing security and convenience for test-takers. The new digital format provides a more fluid and efficient testing experience than its paper-based predecessor. The duration of the examination has been reduced to 2 hours and 14 minutes, with 98 questions being presented in total. The new test is 46 minutes shorter and includes 56 fewer questions than the paper test.

Two-Part Digital SAT Math Section

The Digital SAT comprises two sections, with the Math section being broken down into two equal modules. On test day, you begin with Module 1 of the Reading and Writing section. You have 32 minutes to answer 27 questions in this section. After the time is up, you proceed directly to Module 2, where you have another 32 minutes to answer 27 more questions. Once the Reading and Writing section is complete, you have a 10-minute break.

After the break, you start with Module 1 of the Math section, comprising 35 minutes to answer 22 questions. Similar to the previous section, you can move freely within the module you are in but cannot move ahead or go back. After answering 22 questions, you move to Module 2, where you have an additional 35 minutes to tackle 22 more questions.

What Has Changed Between The Paper SAT & Digital SAT?

calculator and math book - SAT Math Topics

The digital SAT is shorter and features only two sections, Reading and Writing, and Math, reducing the test time to two hours from the original three. This new format will provide a faster, more efficient test-taking experience.

The unique aspect of the math section is the test’s adaptive nature. The questions on the digital test will change based on the student’s performance, ensuring a tailored test for each individual. This adaptive feature transforms the SAT experience, focusing on the students’ specific skills and abilities.

Calculator Use and Question Word Count

Significant changes have occurred in the calculator use and question word count on the SAT Math test. Calculators are now allowed throughout the entire math section. The digital test integrates a graphing calculator to ensure every student has access. This change provides additional support to test-takers, allowing them to utilize tools to enhance their test experience.

The average length of math word problems has also been reduced. Although in-context questions remain a crucial part of the test, the questions are less wordy, making it easier for students to understand and solve the problems. These modifications aim to improve the testing experience by streamlining the processes and providing additional resources to students.

What SAT Math Topics Should You Be Focusing On For The Digital SAT?

Algebra questions on the SAT include solving and graphing linear equations, linear inequalities, and systems of linear equations. I also need to understand linear functions. To do well on algebra questions, it helps to be able to translate word problems into algebraic expressions. I should know how to substitute values into formulas, and I’ll also need to know how to identify when more information is needed to solve a system of equations. If I understand linear equations and functions, I’m likely to do well on algebra questions.

Advanced Math

I like math. SAT questions on advanced math involve nonlinear equations, nonlinear functions, and polynomial, quadratic, radical, exponential, and rational functions. I need to analyze the graphs of these functions and solve equations using them. I should also be able to analyze and solve systems of nonlinear equations. Advanced math questions are challenging, but they cover the math I’m most likely to encounter in college courses and technical schools.

Problem Solving in Real-World Contexts

I like to solve problems. The questions on problem-solving and data analysis on the SAT involve understanding the use of ratios, rates, percentages, and proportional relationships. I need to be able to interpret information presented in graphs or tables and use it to solve problems. I should also be able to evaluate statistical data and calculate probabilities. These questions are designed to test my ability to apply math to real-world situations, which is a crucial skill for college and career readiness.

Geometry and Trigonometry

SAT questions on geometry involve understanding the properties of lines, angles, and triangles. I need to be able to calculate the areas and volumes of shapes and understand the properties of circles. I should also understand the basic concepts of trigonometry, such as sine, cosine, and tangent, and be able to apply these concepts to right triangles. Geometry and trigonometry questions on the SAT are designed to test my ability to apply mathematical principles to solve complex problems.

SAT Math Test Preparation Tips

teacher explaining math in a class - SAT Math Topics

Practicing as many practice questions as possible from previous year’s SAT Maths test papers is one of the most effective ways to prepare for the Math section of the SAT. By solving these questions, you can get familiar with the format of the test, the types of questions that are asked, and the level of difficulty you can expect. This will help you understand the areas where you need to improve and focus your study efforts.

Engaging in the Maths Calculator Section

Engaging in the Math calculator section is a must to develop your skills to solve tough questions. Using a calculator effectively can save you time and help you avoid making simple calculation errors. It can also help you solve complex problems that require a lot of calculations quickly and accurately.

Taking Practice Tests with Answer Sheets

Always take a practice test paired with an answer sheet. This will help you simulate the test-taking experience and get used to the timing and format of the test. It will also help you identify your weak points and areas where you need to improve.

Reviewing Weak Points and Working on Them

Reviewing weak points and working on them is essential for growth. By identifying the areas where you struggle and working on them, you can improve your skills and boost your confidence. This will help you perform better on the Math section of the SAT.

Memorising Strategies and Formulas

Students must memorize the strategies and formulas while practicing for the exam. Strategies like backsolving and picking numbers can be immensely beneficial. These strategies can help you solve tough questions quickly and accurately, saving you valuable time on the test

Emphasising Time Management

Emphasise time management while practicing by keeping a watch nearby. Time management is crucial on the SAT Math section, as you have a limited amount of time to solve each question. Practicing with a timer and working on answering questions quickly and accurately can help you improve your time management skills.

Using Flashcards for Revision

Use flashcards for revision before the Math exam. Flashcards can help you memorize formulas and concepts quickly and easily. They are a great tool for reviewing the material you have studied and can help you reinforce your learning.

Performing Basic Calculations Quickly

As time is limited in this test, students must learn to perform basic calculations to save time. This includes basic multiplication and division, as well as calculations involving numerators and denominators. By practicing these skills, you can save valuable time on the test and focus on solving the more challenging problems.
